Assistant Director, Congressional Affairs
Washington, DC

We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Washington, DC for an Assistant Director, Congressional Affairs (Lobbyist) on our Advocacy team. As part of the team, you will advocate AMA policy effectively with legislative decision makers through intelligence gathering, strategic and tactical planning and recommendations, coalition building, and direct lobbying so that the AMA can both advance and respond to legislative initiatives to promote the interests of patients and physicians. This role has a focus on Senate relationships.


  • Effectively communicates AMA policy to Members of Congress and their staff so that AMA-supported legislation is enacted and other legislation can be modified to more clearly match AMA policy.
  • Collects, analyzes, and communicates political intelligence and legislative information in an accurate and timely manner so that AMA strategy and tactics can be developed and modified as appropriate.
  • Establishes, maintains, and strengthens appropriate relationships with Members of Congress and key personnel and committee staff.
  • Develops and/or participates in existing coalitions to promote AMA’s legislative issues and environment.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities for AMA appearances before Congressional committees, caucuses and conferences, forums, and press events as a means of advocating AMA policies.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with lobbyists representing other organizations, associations, and other entities involved in the health policy arena.
  • Participates in training and development programs in order to be well-versed in AMA policy, supporting arguments, and general legislative issues and environment.


  • Bachelor’s degree with courses in Political Science and Business Administration, or broad experience in promotional and public relations activity in similar fields required.
  • 5 years experience including experience as: (a) an administrative assistant/chief of staff or legislative assistant to a Member of Congress; (b) staff to a congressional committee; (c) legislative representative for another organization; or, (d) must possess a basic knowledge of political activities and personalities at the national level.
  • Prior experience with medical and/or health organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to include relationship building and maintenance skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Specific knowledge concerning makeup of Congress, its committees, and their relation to each other and to Congress as a whole.
  • General understanding of current domestic affairs and their political implications.
  • Working knowledge of the medical community in general including basic understanding of medical association organizational structure.
