Tax Manager

We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Tax Manager on our Finance Team team.  In this role, you will be responsible for supporting AMA’s tax function, including areas of tax compliance, tax accounting, and tax planning for international, federal, exempt organization, state, sales/use, and other taxes. The Tax Manager is responsible for serving as a technical resource in researching and evaluating impacts of tax law changes for the AMA and supporting the Tax Director in recommending modifications to existing processes and policies.  This role will prepare responses and schedules for federal, state, and sales/use tax audits and support all internal departments on tax matters.  


Tax Compliance, Tax Accounting, and Tax Planning
• Prepares federal, state, sales/use, international, and property tax filings, returns, and payments for review by Tax Director
• Identify, develop, and implement improved processes and best practices to increase tax compliance efficiency
• Assists in reviewing proposed transactions and interpret complex tax laws to advise management, and internal stakeholders of tax implications 
• Preparation of income tax provisions for review by Tax Director
• Minimizes tax liability through sound and informed application of laws and regulations

Research and Analysis
• Performs complex tax technical research and tax planning, make recommendations on how to structure transactions, and work with internal stakeholders at all levels and across functions to implement recommendations 
• Monitor and ensure timely identification and compliance with evolving tax law, and communicate impact to Tax Director and management team
• Provide tax law interpretation and prepare technical memorandums that document conclusions in a clear, logical, and comprehensive manner
• Participate and lead special projects as requested 

Audit Representation
•Prepare and review documentation required for audits and responses to auditors
•Prepare and oversee communication with taxing jurisdictions in response to notices and inquiries

May include other responsibilities as assigned


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or similar field required, CPA required, and MST a plus
  2. 5 - 7 years minimum experience public accounting and/or in-house corporate tax experience required, not-for-profit tax experience a plus
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of tax laws
  4. Ability to build strong relationships at all levels throughout the organization
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills required for interaction with all levels of management, including ability to translate complex tax technical laws for non-tax professionals
  6. Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills
  7. Organized and effective at dealing with many activities simultaneously; demonstrated ability to meet commitments and deadlines
